Javits Sun Clouds Canopy

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

We worked directly with the architect during the design phase on this unique job. Initially we helped her explore concepts of stainless steel bar grating sunshades, suggested custom cut patterns of aluminum plates, and tossed around some different ideas. In the end the architect went with “blade” type of louvers of extruded aluminum. The challenge was making a high quality finished structural steel that would handle the wind and snow loads. We worked with our good partner Structures Workshop to develop the member sizes and connection details. We presented the concepts to the architect who made some tweaks. The final product still needed a few finishing touches so we visited the site and got input from the end users to create these sheet metal wrap around bits that go over the gaps in the perimeter angle frame.
